Branding Tips from an Olympic Curler
On Tuesday 2/26/2018 we had a guest speaker for our Exploring your Digital Portfolio class. Her name is Jamie Sinclair and she is an American world championship curler from St. Paul, Minnesota. Jaime has been successful in building her brand through social media. She manages 3 brands including: Jaime Sinclair No. 21 (her personal brand), Curl Up with Jamie (her business brand) and Team Sinclair (her team brand). Jamie also has a successful You Tube channel with approximately 2800 subscribers. On her channel she has different instructional videos and curling tips. She credits getting jobs and sponsorships to her branding. Her most recent offer for employment with NBC commentating for the Winter Olympics was obtained through her YouTube following.
Jamie stated that she had no prior experience as a professional sports commentator.
Jamie shared with our class her tips for easily establishing a brand. The tips she gave us are as follows:
1) Create a logo for your brand
2) Create a website and put the logo on your website
3) Create accounts on social media platforms and use the logo on all of these. Consistency is important when using different platforms. (i.e. using same handle, logo, colors, etc.) Online posting should be on a consistent schedule. Followers and subscribers should know when to expect new content.
4) Develop Content - write a business plan, write blogs, write scripts for instructional videos and create video logs (vlogs). Tell your story. Communicate your brand ideals.
5) Get and keep people engaged. Be sure to reply to inbox messages, comments on posts and other inquiries. It is more personal. You can also offer giveaways and contests for people, liking, subscribing or sharing your brand's information.
6) Use your brand to connect with other brands that have the same ideals. By doing so you gain access to their network.
Jamie describes social media as a continuously updating resume. She warned the class that "Everything you post, you endorse." I appreciate all of the information that she shared with us. It is information that many others would charge money to divulge.
After our speaker, Professor Calderwood introduced the class to 3 websites we can use to present our oral presentations on 3/05/2018. These websites were PREZI, HAIKU DECK and SWAY. I have chosen SWAY for my presentation due to its ease of use.
Our reading for this week was chapter 3 of Untangling theWeb gives us additional information for successful presentations beyond Power Point . The author advises that presentation should be viewed as a publishing platform and when preparing students should focus on content first, then consider their audience and method of delivery. He describes in detail several useful programs for presentations such as SlideShare, Poll Everywhere, VoiceThread and Prezi.
I will be sure to use some of this advice for my social media etiquette presentation this upcoming week.
